CARING FOR YOUNG MINDS BLACK COLLEGE TOUR FOUNDER
LAWRENCE WILLIAMS is the Founder and Tour Coordinator of the Caring For Young Minds Black College Tour. Born and raised in Wilmington, North Carolina, he is the son of Kathy Bethune. He has two siblings: sister, Mira Bethune and brother, Bernard Bethune. Lawrence is a 1985 graduate of Wallace-Rose Hill High School. In 1991, he proudly graduated from North Carolina Central University whereby he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education. In 2000, he graduated from Goucher College with a double Master degree in Education and Athletic Administration.
Currently, Lawrence Williams is the Assistant Principal at Loch Raven Middle School located in Towson, Maryland and he is an active member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated.
Caring For Young Minds Black College Tour was established with a vision to expose students to historically black colleges and universities. Students in middle school and high school have the opportunity to visit and experience different colleges and universities during the week of Spring Break to decide where they want to further their studies and gain the knowledge to select a major.
Since 1998, the Caring for Young Minds Black College Tour has taken hundreds of young African Americans across Black College Campuses. Regardless of the destination, each student realizes the experience was much more enriching than a mere “tour.” Venturing afar or local, all of the students return home with a greater sense of what it means to attain good grades and attend a historically black college. Every child has the opportunity to attend college. With the help of volunteers, this vision came to fruition nearly ten years ago and still thrives today. You can help to take children off of the streets and put them into college classrooms. You can help these students find meaning and purpose in their life! It is not too late to volunteer. Our Goals.
- Raise the percent of homework being turned in.
- Raise the students’ ability to take standardized test.
- Broaden and enrich the educational and career aspirations of all students.
- Raise the percent of latch key students participating in after school programs.
- Help increase the communication and relationship of parents and teachers.
- Provide mentoring experiences to assist adolescents in making the transition to responsible young adults.
- Provide information which will enable young people to develop relationships with others.
